Why I Love… Super Mario RPG!

Since last month I featured my favorite video game character, this month I figured I would share my favorite video game of all time with you! So, without further ado, this is Why I Love… Super Mario RPG!

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars was released in 1996 for the SNES, or Super Nintendo. I was 10 years old at the time and was already madly in love with video games! Back in the day (haha, I know I sound old) there was no looking up videos to watch gameplay- you either saw screenshots forย the game in a magazine or if you were lucky, a store you went to had a demo and you were able to check it out! That was the case for me. I went to Best Buy with my mom one day and there was a demo of a new RPG featuring Mario. Now, I had no clue what RPG even stood for at the time, but I checked it out anyway! As I played through the Forest Maze area on the big screen tv, I knew right then I HAD TO HAVE THAT GAME! Something about it just sucked me right in.

Forest Maze, my intro. to this awesome game!ย

I don’t remember if my mom bought it for me that day or if I had to wait until I got my report card to make sure I got good grades (Mom would typically buy me a video game for getting good grades, and trust me, that was excellent motivation!), but I was so excited to own this game!

One of the top reasons I love this game is the epic soundtrack! I could listen to the music from Super Mario RPG all day long. Every song perfectly fits the level it is assigned to, and there is a wide range of tunes to fit every mood in the game. Some of my favorite music includes “Beware the Forest’s Mushrooms” from the Forest Maze and “Barrel Volcano” from… well, from the Barrel Volcano! If you want to listen to the soundtrack,ย search it up on YouTube… it’s awesome! ๐Ÿ™‚

The Barrel Volcano area looked bad ass and had awesome music too!

Another reason I love Super Mario RPG is the fact that it really gave a lot of the characters in the Mario universe dimension while introducing us to a whole new cast of characters. For instance, it was refreshing to see another side to Bowser as his castle was taken over, and it was great fun to have him team up with Mario! I also loved the totally bad ass Geno, the insane Booster, and the maniacal Smithy.

Just some of the many colorful characters in this game!

Talking about the characters brings me to another huge reason I love this game… the storyline! It was so cool to see the Mushroom Kingdom and all the surrounding areas brought to life in the most unique ways. There certainly had never been a Mario story as expansive as this one before, and it blew me away.

Turns out that Bowser is the least of Mario’s worries in this game!

Another big plus for me is the replay value of this game. I have played through this game so many times, yet I still enjoy the journey every time! I have maxed out all my character stats, found every hidden item, exploited every secret… and yet I still come back for more! Even though this game is now 21 years old, I still love it just as much as when it first came out and I was a wide-eyed kid playing a demo of it at Best Buy.

This part of the game was so bizarre…

These are just a few simple reasons why Super Mario RPG is my favorite video game ever. I’m still hoping for a direct sequel or at least a remaster of it at some point, but in the meantime, I’ll still be playing it on the original SNES cartridge! (Oh, and on Virtual Console too!).

  1. Of course it was bc of good grades and those cost more st that time.you lived it from the start โคwhat s wonderful mother you have๐Ÿ˜„

  2. Ah! I love this! Your admiration of the game is in full-force here. I can tell how much this game means to you. And I find that awesome. Super Mario RPG is a classic, and this is coming from someone who never played it until much later when it came out on Wii Virtual Console. I didn’t know much about RPGs when I was younger either, so I missed out on it. But those graphics wowed me in commercials and on the boxart when I was younger. If only I had experienced it as a kid to have so much nostalgia too.

I feel you with the Forest Maze too! Although I was kind of happy to be stuck in the maze if it meant listening to Yoko Shimomura’s utterly fantastic forest music. I still get it stuck in my head today, which I don’t mind at all! Thanks for sharing about your favorite game ever.

And I think I’ve told you before, but I love this series! I’m sort of planning something similar, but I’ll hopefully have a better idea soon. Regardless, excellent article and an enjoyable read!

    1. Aww thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed this article! (And I still can’t wait to see what sort of series you are planning!) I had so much fun writing it. I could have probably written 5000 words about this game and still have plenty more to talk about, but I tried to keep it concise lol!

Even though you didn’t get to experience it when it first came out, I’m glad you could still play it on the virtual console! I actually love the fact that I was able to still grasp on to the concepts of playing an RPG without really knowing what an RPG was- Nintendo and Square really did a great job with it!

It’s funny, every time I even read the words “Forest Maze” that music automatically gets stuck in my head! ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Once a love reaches at least a decade you know it’s going to last forever! I watched an LP of this game a little while ago and was mad I’d never experienced it before! I want to play it myself now since it’s an RPG (my favorite genre), and it has very high replay value. I loved the optional battle with Culex, the Final Fantasy-esque boss lol. It is a collaboration with Square, so it’s not unexpected ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. You are absolutely right! I have so many great memories of playing this game as a kid and I’m just happy I’ve been able to enjoy this game many times through the years! Hopefully you’ll get to play it sometime! Culex was cool but man was he an asshole if you didn’t know what you were doing! Haha! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. I love your passion for this game.. makes me smile and feel gooey inside! ha ha.. But, no, I am definitely not making fun of you! I have never played this Mario ever, but it sure gets my attention when you talk about it! The soundtrack sounds amazing and everything in it. I don’t have a childhood game to relate this to because I didn’t play video games until my 20’s. But I do have kind of love for many of the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons/Rune Factory games… so I do understand! I do like Princess Peach.. even though she is always getting herself into trouble..She’s just cute to me. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Haha! I am pretty passionate about this game ๐Ÿ˜‰ There are games I’ve played as an adult that I get a bit nostalgic about too, so it’s ok that you don’t have a childhood game to relate to! You should look up the soundtrack on YouTube, it’s so awesome! This is truly a game that I have mastered but still love to play again and again! Haha that’s cute that you like Princess Peach! She does get herself in trouble way too much! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. Okay!! I am playing Beware the Forestโ€™s Mushrooms on Youtube as I type this! Ha.. nice tune to it! Wow, it sounds more modern than it is.. and the Forest Maze is one of those that could stick in your head forever and forever.. lol!! And Barrel Volcano has a good beat, but could easily get stuck in your head too!! My favorite I would have to say is Beware the Forestโ€™s Mushrooms… It is more pretty sounding and the tune is nice. It sounds newer than what it is.. or is it just me? Yes, Princess Peach is my kind of princess!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. If I even read “Forest Maze” the Beware the Forest Mushrooms song gets stuck in my head! A lot of the tunes from Super Mario RPG sound a bit more modern to me so I know what you mean! It’s so nice when a game has such a great soundtrack. There are several games that have great music that I love to listen to even when I’m not playing them, haha! ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. There’s a lot of great video game music out there!! I also love music to Skyrim, The Elder Scrolls, Witcher 3, Dragon Age, Assassin’s Creed, and so many others out there… The repetitive music like on the Mario games get so stuck in my head… They stay in my head for days sometimes!!! LOL. OH… and I love Dragon Quest songs too.. ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Wow I had no clue Best Buy was around so long, oh yeah the days long before the internet seems like a forgotten time lol, a truly excellent game especially for a RPG fan, it gave all we ever wanted and more, glad to see someone else share fond memories of it’s excellence ๐ŸŒ

    1. Yep, Best Buy has been around for quite awhile! I used to love going in there as a kid to look through their games and play demos. It’s still neat to look around nowadays, but it’s not quite the same experience. Glad to see you think highly of Super Mario RPG as well! ๐Ÿ™‚
