One of the things about moving is the undeniable fact that sometimes, your shit just gets shoved into a bag or a box and you don’t see it for months after you move in! There are still random bags and boxes laying around that we just haven’t had time to unpack yet, despite the fact that we have been in our new home for several months now.
One set of items I have not really put away yet are my socks! I’ve just been keeping them in a bag because I do not have a dresser (my old one was falling apart, so it did not come with me to the new house). Well, while going through the sock bag not to long ago, I uncovered these babies:
Can you believe this? Donkey Kong Country socks! Donkey Kong Country came out in 1994 for the Super Nintendo… and I’m pretty sure that’s when these socks came out. I was a kid so they were HUGE on me, but I wanted them so badly that I didn’t care. I wore them until they got holes in them and the designs got faded, but I never could bring myself to throw them away!
I also have been holding on to this:
This Donkey Kong Country 2 shirt has been around since 1995! I remember if you bought the game from Toys R Us, you would get this shirt as a free gift. I had gone with my mom and my grandma to the store that day to go Christmas shopping, but they would shoo me away anytime they picked up something for me, and I promised not to look in the cart. While they were checking out, I was standing a little ways away from them, but I noticed the cashier give my mom the DKC2 shirt! Nine-year-old-me knew the only way to get that shirt was to buy the game, so I knew I was getting it for Christmas that year! I didn’t say a word about it, though, because I didn’t want my mom to know that I had figured that out!
The shirt only came in adult Large, so the shirt was way too big for me anyway. My mom kept it for a few years, then gave it to me when I got a little older. It’s got a million holes in it, but I still wear it to bed every now and then if it’s super chilly! ๐
What awesomeness those socks are delightful and the shirt is epic as well๐
I agree! I don’t think I will ever get rid of them!
Those socks are so awesome and that shirt is like a collector’s item now! I loved Donkey Kong Country when I was growing up. ๐
I know, I am so glad I held on to them for so many years! I loved DKC too! I played it so much I pretty much memorized every level. I still love playing it today! ๐
These are awesome! I love your story about getting the shirt as a gift. I was the kid that never figured out what was in the wrapping paper until it was unwrapped and in my hands, so I was always surprised at whatever I had gotten. I did wear out a New Kids on the Block shirt until it was full of holes and had suffered a round of bleach in the washing machine, so I completely understand having an immense love for a piece of clothing like you’ve described here.
Thanks! ๐ I normally didn’t have many ideas about what I was getting, and if I wouldn’t have seen the cashier hand my mom that shirt, I wouldn’t have known I was getting the game. I liked to be surprised and I still do! ๐ Ah, New Kids on the Block… pretty sure I had a few of their shirts back in the day too! ๐
DKC2 is one of my favorite games, and I would have loved that shirt growing up! I remember getting a Banjo-Kazooie t-shirt (and soundtrack) with a purchase of the game. I miss the days where you got extras like that without having to pay for an ultimate or platinum edition.
I think DKC2 is my favorite out of all the DKCs! I just loved the gloomy atmosphere, awesome music and fun but sometimes really challenging levels! That’s cool that you got a Banjo-Kazooie shirt and soundtrack! I miss getting free perks like that as well.
Oh.. totally love the vintage Donkey Kong socks and shirt.. Wow.. how neat that you still have them after all these years!!! One of toys I collected as a kid was the My Little Pony from the 80’s and 90’s. I had collected about 30 of them over the years. However, they were ruined from a roof leak in my mom-in-law’s house and didn’t survive. ๐ฆ It was sad to lose my childhood pony collection. Anyways, it’s so cool that you still have your old DK things!! Hopefully you can keep them and pass them down to your relatives!! ๐
Yeah, I’m happy I still have these things too! Even though they are old and well-worn, I still want to hang on to them! Aww, that’s sad about your My Little Pony stuff! That’s a real bummer. ๐ฆ
