Why I Love… The Game Boy!

Hey everyone! Iย feel like I am so far behind on my posts… I normally try to post this “Why I Love” feature on the 1st or 2nd of every month (clearly we are way past those dates), I still haven’t done my recap of my Four in February (in March) results, I haven’t done my First Impressions post for Harvest Moon: Animal Parade, and so on. With everything that has been going on lately, my motivation for producing a halfway decent blog post has pretty much gone out the window.

I’ve slowly been trying to get back to normal, but it’s been hard. I’m getting there though! I just want to thank all you guys for your support and kind comments. I’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating: I am so happy to be part of this wonderful community. You guys mean a lot to me and I happy to have so many friends on here! By the way, I’m behind on reading pretty much everyone’s blogs, but don’t worry, I’ll catch up soon! ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway! Blogging is cathartic for me, so I figured it was time I get back to posting! Like I said, I’m a bit behind on the posts I wanted to make, but oh well. I set no time limits for myself, so I’ll get to them when I get to them! ๐Ÿ˜‰

With all of that being said, this month’s Why I Love… post is all about the Nintendo Game Boy!

Released in North America in 1989, this little gray box soon became synonymous with handheld gaming. And I wanted one!

I love the Game Boy!

My mom said I was watching tv when I was about 6 and an ad came on for the Game Boy. She said I watched it, intrigued, then looked at her and said “I think I would like one of those.” 6-year-old me was apparently very polite! ๐Ÿ˜‰

This isn’t a screenshot of the tv ad, but whatever, you get the idea!

So, my awesome mom bought me a Game Boy that Christmas bundled with Tetris. She bought me one other game simply because the box art looked cute. That game was none other than Kirby’s Dream Land!

I don’t remember if the box looked like this or not!

I was so surprised and delighted that I finally got my hands on a Game Boy! My friend down the street had one, as well as a couple kids in school, so I had played with one frequently. It was so fun to have my own, though! I remember COUNTLESS hours playing both Tetris and Kirby’s Dream Land.

It is always pretty sweet when you get a “tetris”!

When I was young, my bedtime was 9:00 p.m. on school nights. After I got that Game Boy, I would constantly beg my mom to let me stay up “just 5 more minutes” to play! On one occasion I remember I was about to beat Kirby’s Dream Land for the first time, and it was time for bed. Man, did I beg and beg to stay up! She finally agreed that I could stay up until 9:30. I don’t recall if I actually beat the game that night, but having an extra 30 minutes of gaming time was pretty sweet!

I don’t care if this game takes only 15 minutes to beat, it is one of my all time favorites!

I also remember playing Game Boy with my friends all the time. Oftentimes one of us would be playing with 5 or 6 more kids crowded around, trying to see the screen. Since the screen was a little hard to see sometimes, I had a nifty little light/ magnifying device that attached to the Game Boy for easier gaming!

The struggle was real back when screens weren’t backlit!

The Game Boy gave me SO many hours of enjoyment, and I still enjoy the games I have today. I have 35 original Game Boy games (click here to see what I have!). ย My Game Boy still works, too! I also got the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance when they came out and have many games for those systems too! The original Game Boy will forever hold a special place in my heart, though, because it was the first gaming system I officially owned!

  1. This post had me smiling from ear to ear! I can just imagine you as a super polite child inquiring for such an awesome machine! I’m happy your parents indulged you because it seems like this experience really helped to shape your thoughts and feelings about gaming, and maybe a certain franchise? Your avatar speaks volumes ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m so glad that you still have your Game Boy and that it’s in working condition. My GB’s screen came unglued, so I haven’t played it in a long while. I usually just throw games into the Super Game Boy or the Game Boy Player instead.

Your list of GB games is pretty excellent! I’m jealous of all your Kirby games! Is Hoshi no Kirby something worth trying to find? I’ve never heard of it before!

    1. Aww I’m glad you enjoyed my post! ๐Ÿ™‚ Haha yeah I am so happy I was able to get a Game Boy, because it really did jump start my whole gaming experience. Before I had only played with my friends, but once I had a system of my own, I realized how awesome video games were! ๐Ÿ™‚ And of course with Kirby, it was love at first sight!!

Aww that sucks that your GB screen came unglued! Sometimes when I turn on a game it will look like part of the screen is cut off (like maybe there is a whole row of dead pixels or something) but it plays really well. I don’t play it too often though, I’m like you- I will use the Super Game Boy, Game Boy Player, or my Game Boy Advance SP!

Hoshi no Kirby is the Japanese version of Kirby’s Dream Land. ๐Ÿ™‚ They are identical games (some of the text in game is actually in English, which is kind of weird!) but I just bought it because it was cheap and I love Kirby lol! ๐Ÿ˜‰

      1. I really did enjoy it! Thank you for sharing!

My boyfriend’s GB screen has a blob of dead pixels similar to what you’re describing, except it’s near the mid-bottom-right, so sometimes it can interfere with the gameplay. I think these screen issues are pretty common, but it’s too bad. I’d love to hammer out some Link’s Awakening while “chained” to a power outlet near a window like I used to in my childhood.

Phew! I’m glad Hoshi no Kirby is not some epic game I had been missing out on all this time! I’m pretty happy that the Game Boy isn’t region locked so that we can pick up whatever and play whatever, whenever. I’ll have to look into more Japanese games sometime. There are probably some real gems out there.

Hope you’re having a wonderful long weekend!

      2. Yeah you’re right, screen issues probably are pretty common, especially with an aging system. Haha, sometimes I want to play games like I used to when I was a kid as well! I’ll try to sit on the floor sometimes and play just like I did when I was a kid, but my back starts aching very quickly lol!!

I’m so glad the GB isn’t region locked either! Besides Hoshi no Kirby, I’ve got a Japanese Tamagotchi game that is pretty fun too. I’d love to pick up more Japanese games too ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope you are having a great weekend as well!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I never had an original game boy (or a colour, but there were ‘ways’ around that) so I’m super jealous of this! I’d have loved to have played Tetris on it back in the day. Then again I’d have never slept again.

    1. Aww that’s too bad you weren’t able to get one! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ I consider myself lucky that I was able to get a Game Boy when I was young! Haha I know what you mean about playing Tetris! I played it so much, I still saw the blocks falling when I was trying to sleep at night! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. The real question is not “Why I love the Game Boy”, but “How could you not love Game Boy?”. BTW I remember the problems with the screens wnen they weren’t backlit, especially with the GBA which is even darker than the GB…

    1. That is true, the Game Boy deserves much love! ๐Ÿ™‚ Oh yes the screen was pretty dark, but the light that I had attached to it helped a great deal. Otherwise, I would just sit under a lamp to play! ๐Ÿ™‚ As a kid I didn’t mind, but now my eyesight sucks and I need things to be bright so I can see them LOL!

  4. I am glad to hear you are slowly getting back to normal. It’s a rough and steep road, but we get there eventually!

I can relate to the feelings you described regarding the Gameboy. The same thing happened to me when I got Pokรฉmon Red and a Game Boy Pocket. Oh, boy, did I go crazy with those two. Entering the Pokรฉmon world for the first time is something I will never forget. I still remember the feeling of catching my first Pokรฉmon (a Weedle) and I also recall exactly where I was when that happened. And that was 21 years ago!!! How crazy is that?

    1. Thanks Matt, I’m glad too! ๐Ÿ™‚ Just trying to stay as positive as I can.

Aww that’s an awesome story about your first time playing Pokรฉmon! I have a feeling that many of us who love video games can recall details like that! I have a lot of great memories related to gaming experiences ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Thank you for sharing your stories! I’m glad that this was cathartic for you, and also that you got to talk about something you love! I love that your mom got Kirby because the box art looked cute. That’s awesome. It makes so much sense why you love Kirby, playing the original so much. It’s exciting that Nintendo is going to be celebrating its 25th anniversary this year!

I admittedly didn’t play Game Boy much until Pokemon, though I had the big handheld since I was younger. I just didn’t get to play the awesome Kirby’s Dream Land games like you did!

    1. You are welcome, I love sharing stuff like this! ๐Ÿ™‚ I always loved sharing the story of how my mom bought Kirby just because she thought the box art was cute! I don’t think she knew how crazy I would become about Kirby though, haha! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I consider myself very lucky that I was able to enjoy the Game Boy in it’s heyday. ๐Ÿ™‚ Glad you had a Game Boy too, even if you didn’t play it as much! Now that I think about it, my mom was probably always buying batteries for that thing, so I’m sure she wished I didn’t play it as much as I did! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. Glad to see another great post from you! I hope everything works out well for you. ๐Ÿ™‚

I love the Game Boy! My first portable gaming system was a Game Boy Color with Pokemon Yellow. Ah, the good old days.

    1. Aww thank you!! Glad you enjoyed my post! ๐Ÿ™‚ I had a lot of fun writing it!

That’s neat that your first portable system was the Game Boy Color! I remember after all the years of playing Game Boy, when the Game Boy Color came out I was blown away! I played a lot of Pokรฉmon Crystal on my GBC ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. I so love hearing about your happy childhood memories!! I can imagine it all in my head as you write!! So your post reminded me back to a long ago time when I can recall my little sister wanting a Gameboy for her birthday one year… We didn’t have much money, so normally something as pricey as a Gameboy isn’t something we would get as a birthday gift. However, my little sister really wanted this Gameboy. She talked about it and pleaded non-stop for days I remember. And surprisingly enough, she did get that Gameboy and was ecstatic over it!! I believe the game she had was Super Mario Land. Maybe? She played it non-stop for days when we weren’t busy with school or chores. I didn’t get the chance much to play it myself since she didn’t share very well. LOL. That was the only game that she ever owned for the Gameboy. After that… years later… I remember getting an Atari system at a yard sale once.. even though it was a used and older model at the time and other systems had come out by then. My sisters and I rarely ever got to play the Atari we had because my dad never wanted us inside the house. We had to stay outside always or he would yell. Yep, so that was my tiny first experience of owning a game system as a kid.. lol. Later, after marriage, my hubby bought me a Gamecube when we were first married. I didn’t even know what a Gamecube was at the time! But he got it for me and my first game on it was Super Mario Sunshine!! LOVED THAT GAME.. Anyway… loved you sharing your love for Gameboy!! It is so sweet.. ๐Ÿ™‚ I am not surprised that your mom gave you Kirby as one of your first games… It fits you!! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Glad you liked my post! ๐Ÿ™‚ That’s neat that your sister got a GameBoy, even though she wouldn’t share lol! I have Super Mario Land and it’s a pretty fun game, though it’s a little weird. Wow, you got an Atari at a yard sale, cool! Do you still have it? We have my husband’s Atari from when he and his siblings were kids, along with a bunch of games! Oh yeah Super Mario Sunshine is such a great game! And the GameCube… I love it! It’s one of my favorite systems for sure! ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. ha! I wish we still had that Atari! That would be awesome! lol. But, no, don’t have the Atari and was long gone forever. Not sure what happened to it. Most likely my parents gave it away. How often do you play on the Atari? I would love the chance to play Super Mario Sunshine again! lol.

      2. Bummer! My mom always cleaned my room when I was a kid and got rid of stuff when I wasn’t home (lol) but she never ever got rid of anything video game related thank goodness! We don’t really play Atari that often, but hopefully that will change at some point. I have a small 19″ tv that I plan on hooking up “retro” consoles to once my office is done being organized, so we’ll probably play it more then!
