My Humble Blogger Beginnings!

Recently, my fellow blogging friend The Well-Red Mage posed a question on his site that was simple, but very thought provoking: What have you learned since your first blog post? To answer this question, I thought it would be fun to go back to the very beginning of my blogging roots… way back in 2003.

When I first started blogging, I used the “blog” as more of a diary of sorts. Hence the reason my first blog was on the now defunct Anyway, here are snippets from the blogs I’ve had over the years! I’m happy I saved all of these…

1.Title: “You Won’t Read This…” 6/11/2003- 10/15/2004

I think I was being sarcastic when I came up with the title, haha. Anyway, I started this blog the summer before my senior year of high school, and I had a couple of friends who did the same thing. I just wrote about some of my day-to-day activities and complained about how I didn’t want to be in high school anymore! I do have to share this amazing quote from my very first entry:

I got really mad at my little cousin bc when i was at my best friends house yesturday she took one of my gamecube games home and everyone knows NEVER to touch my video games.

HAHAHA! Never touch my video games without permission! Also, I’m really disappointed that I misspelled yesterday…

2. Untitled AOL blog- 9/14/2004- 10/14/2004

I only made this blog because Open Diary had some serious hacking issues and was really irritating me. From my first entry, though, you can tell that I was feeling funny about people reading my stuff:

Well I made this journal cuz I have one on open diary but that website got hacked into and they are still fixing things so… I decided to make one on aol instead. Plus my friends don’t know about this one so that’s a plus as well lol =)

3. Title: “Watch Me Burn” 10/15/2004- 10/04/2005

Fun fact: The title is actually a song lyric from Three Days Grace. Anyway! I made this blog when Open Diary got its shit together, only to abandon it a year later because (and I quote myself) “I just like Myspace better.” I don’t think any of my friends except for one of them was even aware of this blog, and I wanted it that way. Quote from my first entry (which wasn’t that entertaining):

What’s the point in having a diary if you have to hide things? So, welcome to my new diary. if you want to read my old one feel free to ask me for the address- but I bet none of you will do that anyway. So yeah, enjoy.

I was always a cynical little goth… 😉

4. Untitled Myspace Blog 7/15/2005- 6/19/2006

As I said above, I liked Myspace back in the day, and I thought it was neat that they had a journal feature. It was fun to write a snippet or two about my daily life, until I realized that I had a lot of sneaky readers. That creeped me out. My first entry eluded to the fact that this blog might not last long:

Well, I don’t really know how often I will write in this thing, because I have an online diary already. Wanna read it? Too bad!

I also noted that my current mood was “aggravated” so I guess I was crabby that day!

5. Title: “Pointless Ramblings”- 6/29/2007- 12/01/2009

Yep… a year later, I decided to go ahead and make ANOTHER Open Diary blog. This one proved to be a bit longer lasting than my other blogs, and no one in real life read it at all. As you can tell from part of my first entry, I was tired of people:

I stopped writing on myspace because there are a lot of fucking wierdos on that site, and honestly, too many people had access to my profile… Anyway, my whole point is, I didn’t like myspace because too many people read my shit. I like being a little more anonymous.

**Grumbles because past-me misspelled weirdos!** Anyway, I was finally writing for just for myself and not for any of my friends to read. I actually did some fun stuff with this blog, participating in some writing challenges and surveys.

I think I just gave up on it because I just lost interest in writing about my daily life. I didn’t realize at the time that I could “blog” about better things 😉

6. Title: “Defy The Majority” 5/08/2010- 5/13/2010

I tried out Google’s Blogger platform just because it seemed like fun, and I missed writing. To quote myself:

I came across this blogging thing after poking around google’s site and decided to give it a try. I’ve done online diaries in the past, but abandoned them all eventually. Maybe I’ll keep up with this.

I only wrote 3 entries on it, because I decided that nope, I wasn’t going to keep up with it. Something about the title sure looks familiar, though, doesn’t it? 😉

All this, my friends, brings me to…

7. Title: “Walk Away From The Sun…” 11/15/2015- current

Another fun fact: “Walk Away From the Sun” is actually one of my favorite songs ever. (It’s by Seether, if you really want to know) It was stuck in my head while I was creating this blog, so voila, there was my blog title! And if you read one of my recent entries, you know why my name on here is DefyTheMajority 😉

My purpose for this current blog is summed up in my entire first entry:

This is a blog I actually created a long time ago, but for many reasons, had to put off starting it. After getting some inspiration from other video game bloggers, I’ve decided to take the plunge and go ahead and get started! This blog will mostly be centered around all things video games- whether that be a game review from myself, gaming news, random pics from games, whatever! One thing to keep in mind as you are reading this: I am doing this blog to entertain MYSELF. Please keep any negative thoughts or comments to yourself, as I will not tolerate them. Thanks for reading!

This was all I wrote in my first entry, but you can still click here if you want to see it! I think I have stuck with this blog for many reasons:

1. I am doing it for myself, not for anyone else.
2. I am writing about my favorite hobby, which of course is video games. I do occasionally write about personal things, but I try to keep my focus on gaming!
3. I have met an amazing bunch of people here that I really enjoy talking to!
4. I enjoy what I do here.

So, what have I learned throughout this journey? Mostly, I’ve learned to just focus on what I am passionate about. I was never one to share a bunch of personal information with the world, and even writing anonymously on Open Diary felt like I was revealing too much about myself. That’s why those other blogs never lasted. Ditching the personal journal-style blogging in favor of video game journal-style blogging really made a difference. I’m glad I have all those older blogs to look back on, but I’d much rather be writing about video games, so here we are.

Also, I learned how to spell “yesterday.” And “weirdos.” Life is good.

Even More Plushies!

During a recent trip to Walgreens, I was looking for who-knows-what when my husband came up to me with two little plush figures in his hand. “Bet you want both of these,” he said. I took one look and thought they were so adorable! I commented that they were probably a little pricey but I’d think about it. He put them in my basket, and we continued shopping. We got several things that day, so… I accidentally bought both of the plushies anyway! I wasn’t even paying attention since I had several things in my basket! Though they were $9 apiece (which is kind of a lot, considering how small they are) I’m happy to have them anyway!

The first one I got is a Goomba. So adorable! The only other Goomba-related item I have is a small plastic figurine, so this plush is a nice addition to my collection.

The second one I got is from the world of Animal Crossing, and it is… Timmy and Tommy?! Huh? I only got one of them, which one is it?!?!

It’s really bizarre that the name on this one seems to be interchangeable. At the very least, Timmy and Tommy should be sewn together and sold as one plush, instead of you having to buy two of the same plush just so you can call one Timmy and the other one Tommy! What a rip. Oh well, he’s still cute anyway! I’m just going to call this one Timmy.

Here they both are together!

I really love both of these, especially the Goomba. 🙂

By the way, I realize I haven’t been blogging much of my gaming adventures lately. I’ve just been super tired and when I sit down to play games, I just want to play them through instead of feeling “obligated” to summarize what I’ve been doing after each session. I’ll do a post soon to update what I’ve been doing, don’t worry! 🙂

The Entertainer Blogger Award!

A few weeks ago, my friend benez256 was awarded several blogging awards! He combined them into one post, nominated a few great bloggers (and myself, which is really flattering!) and told us that we could pick and choose the questions we wanted to answer! I’m going to answer the questions from the Entertainer Blogger Award!

1. What do you hope to gain from blogging?

As you probably know by now, I started this blog simply to entertain myself. I just wanted a place where I could write very casually about video games- almost “journal style,” if you will. I had no expectations for this blog at all, so I’m pleased to have gained some good friends that share my passion for video games! It doesn’t matter to me if I ever have thousands of followers or millions of hits… I just want to keep on having fun writing! 🙂

2. What genre of film entertains you the most?

Horror, without a doubt. I love anything with ghosts, demons, vampires, etc. The scarier, the better!! Not only am I a fan of more blatant horror, but I love psychological thrillers too. In close second to horror is comedy- I love to laugh! I realize these two genres really contradict each other, but I’m a weirdo, what can I say…

3. Do you consider yourself a writer, and what inspires you to write?

I don’t consider myself a writer in the traditional sense. I purposely keep my writing style very casual because I want it to be as if we are friends just chatting about our hobbies. As far as what inspires me to write… everything does! At any given moment, I have many ideas for what I want to write about running through my head.

4. What is your biggest pet peeve?

Hmm… I’m going to have to go with random, annoying noises. I don’t know what it is about incessant clicking, scraping noises, or random beeping, but it puts my brain into instant rage mode!

5. Why did you choose your particular WordPress username?

Haha, this is a great question! So, when I was a teenager, one of my favorite CDs was Land of the Free? by Pennywise (a punk-rock band, for those unfamiliar). My little goth heart was thrilled by a song so sweetly entitled “Fuck Authority.” I still love this song! 😉 Anyway, the lyrics are great, especially the part that says “Fuck authority… defy the majority…” The phrase “Defy the Majority” really struck a chord with me. To me, it doesn’t necessarily mean go out and be an asshole for no reason… it just means be yourself, do whatever is good for you no matter what the mainstream says to do! Many years later, when I started this blog, I figured “Defy the Majority” was a great name for it.

By the way, also many years later, I realized that they were not saying “defy the majority” at all… they were actually saying “silent majority.” WHAT! MY WHOLE LIFE WAS A LIE! I can’t believe I misunderstood the words for so many years. Whatever, at least I got a cool motto out of it!

Well, thanks for reading! And thanks again to Benez256 for nominating me, I really appreciate it! If anyone wants to answer any of these, I’m nominating everyone, so feel free to do so! 🙂

New Kirby and Luigi Plush!

Recently, my mom was shopping at her local Best Buy and she came across two random plushies she thought I would enjoy! She bought them and shipped them over to me (along with some other non-related gaming goodies!) and I was pretty thrilled to receive them!

The first one I got was a cute little Kirby!

Yes, I know, I have many Kirby plushies, but this one is actually the smallest and softest one of the bunch! His facial expression is super cute, too. I love him!

The second one I got was Luigi!

I really love this one because I don’t have many Luigi items at all. He’s pretty small as well. When I sit them next to each other, Kirby looks pretty huge next to Luigi, which is kind of comical.

I actually went to my Best buy a couple days ago (and the goodies I got will be detailed in another entry!) and I saw the Kirby there, but not the Luigi. I was tempted to buy the Kirby just because, but I realized that might be a little excessive, haha! 😉

Pokémon GO Progress!

I still like to play Pokémon GO for a few minutes sometimes when I’m out and about, and I’ve caught a few new critters since the last time I posted an update about the game! I’ve caught a Dunsparce…

a Doduo (yay!)…

a Sudowoodo…

an Aipom…

and my favorite catch of all…

Yes! I caught Snorlax! She (yes, mine is a girl, which seems odd) literally just popped up out of nowhere one day and I was shocked! I’m so happy I have a Snorlax 🙂

Besides that, I am at Level 20…

And I’ve earned two medals. One is for catching 500 Pokémon, and one is for catching 10 Rock-type Pokémon.

Not bad for someone who just plays casually! 🙂 I still want to “Catch ’em All” but Snorlax was pretty much at the top of my wanted list, so I’m pretty thrilled about that! Now if only I could catch a damn Ditto…

Four in February (in March) Results… in May!

Haha the title of this post is ridiculous, I know! Actually, this whole post is ridiculous. Since I’ve been such a slacker lately with my posting (though not without good reason) I feel like I’ve fallen so far behind! I’ve been meaning to do this summary post for awhile, I just had other things I wanted to do first! It’s not like my results are super exciting, but let’s get to it!

Done in March… with results not discussed until May… maybe I should give it up already…

One Game I’ve Been Playing Anyway- Super Mario Run!

I think I probably made the best progress with this game, considering I beat it! I started replaying the levels to collect all the colored coins, but I am nowhere near done with that. I also started getting pissed off playing through Toad Rally to collect Toads to unlock some additional characters, and I managed to get Peach and Blue Yoshi (I already had Toad unlocked, too). I still have several characters to unlock, which is fine with me. I’m just happy I beat the main game, so I consider this part of the challenge a success!

One Game I Should Have Definitely Beaten By Now- Pokémon Blue!

No, just… no. This was the game I made the least amount of progress in, because I made NO progress at all! Didn’t even turn it on! Oh, I THOUGHT about playing it. I really did. I just… didn’t. Fail!

One Game I’ve Had Forever And Haven’t Touched- Harvest Moon: Animal Parade!

I did make decent progress on this game. At the end of the challenge, I was in Year One, Spring, Day 5. That’s not super far into the game, but at least I did start it. And the game is fun and adorable, so I’m still playing it!

One Game Together- ZombiU!

After the first week of the challenge (where our current objective was to Raid the Military Armory), my husband and I made no more progress with this game. That’s sad, because it is really fun! We actually haven’t played it since then, and we really need to get back and finish it.

Bonus Game- Pokémon GO!

Yes, I’m using an old ass screenshot where I’m only at level 5… don’t judge!

Since Pokémon GO is a game I’ll often turn on for just a few minutes when I’m out and about, it’s pretty easy to make progress as the weeks go by. I did pretty decently during the challenge, catching several new critters along the way. I’m actually going to do a Pokémon GO post soon, writing about the catches I’ve made over the past month or so. One of them I am SO EXCITED about and I don’t think any Pokémon I catch from now on will make me as happy 😉

So there you have it- my somewhat lame results from my Four in February (in March) challenge. Hopefully I’ll do something else like this soon and it won’t take me so long to write about it, haha!

Why I Love… Animal Crossing!

This month, I thought I’d give some love to one of my favorite video game series, Animal Crossing! For those unfamiliar with the series, “Animal Crossing” is also the name of the first game released in North America… but for the purpose of this post, I’ll just focus on the series as a whole!

For me, my love of Animal Crossing started when I was 16. I had been seeing previews of it for months in the Nintendo Power magazine. It seemed like such an interesting idea for a game: rather than have levels to beat and ultimately, an ending, this game continued on indefinitely. You played at your own pace, you completed goals at your own pace, and the best part of it all: you lived among many animal villagers!

The day the first Animal Crossing came out, my mom and I had actually taken my dog to the vet. She cut her leg open on some chicken wire we had in the back yard (my poor baby!) and though it wasn’t a life threatening injury, she needed some surgery to get all patched up. To pass the time, we went to Target, and there I saw the game! I just had to have it that day.

My first days of playing, I was amazed. The animals were so adorable, and there were so many things I wanted to do to perfect my little town. I had a mortgage I wanted to pay off so I could make my house bigger, I had fish and bugs I wanted to catch, I had errands to run for my little animal friends… and I loved every second of it! Every day was a new experience.

Building a snowman is something I don’t get to do in real life!

The first (North American) version of Animal Crossing came out in 2002, and there have been a few sequels since: Animal Crossing: Wild World, Animal Crossing: City Folk, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf, plus an updated version of New Leaf called Animal Crossing: New Leaf Welcome amiibo. There have been two spin-offs: Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer and Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival. There have been three versions released exclusively in Japan: Doubutsu no Mori (which was released before the first N.A. version of Animal Crossing), Doubutsu no Mori + (also released before the first N.A. version) and Doubutsu no Mori e+. Doubutsu no Mori was also released on the Chinese iQue player, which was featured in a blog post I wrote a long time ago! In addition, Wild World was re-released onto the Wii U Virtual Console. Aside from the iQue player version, I own all of these games. Yes- Every. Single. One! Crazy, I know!

Stitches, one of my favorite characters!

The world of Animal Crossing continues to draw me back in for many reasons. For one, I love the relaxing nature of the games. A few months after I got the first Animal Crossing, I became very ill. I was in the hospital for two weeks and when I got out, I was still pretty weak and sick and couldn’t even go to school. I had to be homeschooled for the last 3 months of my junior year of high school, and that wasn’t super fun. However, I relied on Animal Crossing as my daily escape. Visiting my villagers every day and going through my daily chores made me feel so much better mentally, despite being sick. It really made a difference in my well-being!

You never know what the villagers are going to say!

Also, I love the fact that the games are real-time. If it’s 3 in the morning for you, it’s 3 in the morning in the game (unless you mess with the time!). Seasons pass just like in real life, which is amazing for me since where I live, there is practically no winter! There are holidays to celebrate, too, which is a lot of fun. Wild World has its own set of made up holidays, but all of the other games feature holidays such as Christmas, Halloween, and Easter!

Celebrating Festivale, a weird and wonderful holiday!

The fact is, Animal Crossing has been a part of my life for almost 15 years now, and my love for the series has only grown over time! I still check in on all of my towns in my various games, though real life gets in the way and I don’t check them as often as I would like. I’m super excited for the mobile Animal Crossing game (which there is very little information about), and I can’t wait to see new console versions of the series as well, if they plan on releasing more. If not, I have plenty of established villages to keep me entertained! 🙂
