Are Video Games Art?

Back in September,Β The Well-Red Mage asked another thought provoking question that I thought would be fun to answer! Took me long enough to answer, right? *rolls eyes* Anyway, his question this time around was quite simple: Are Video Games Art?

Obviously not my photo… credit belongs to the Mage πŸ˜‰

There were many people that gave excellent, thoughtful responses to this question. If you haven’t yet checked it out, click on the link in the first paragraph and go read them! Anyway, I’m not going to give some long, philosophical response on what is considered “art” and why something should or should not be considered art. For me, the answer is simple: yes.

To me, video games are considered art because they are created for us to enjoy. That creation (whether it ends up well-received or not) is the result of someone’s hard work and dedication. And yes, every part of the game is art to me- from the graphics to the musical score to the story- it’s all art. Of course, whether we like the game or not is totally subjective, just like every other artistic medium. Not every type of game will appeal to everyone, and that’s okay! πŸ™‚

  1. Thank you for replying to this question! A response is better late than never! It seems to me that you and I have similar views considering why games are an art form. I believe art is in the creation not in the observation, in the function and result of creative activity not in social or cultural acceptance. In the latter view, jazz was not an art form until it became accepted by the mainstream but that seems ridiculous to me since nothing fundamentally changed about the nature of jazz before and after its acceptance. Same thing with games. And as you pointed out, because you like the game or not is irrelevant to the game existing as a work within an art form: a work of art, literally, not meaning a masterpiece but meaning the creation of an artist.

  2. You definitely don’t have to like art for it to be considered art! That would be a terrible means of measure. I don’t like certain films, but it doesn’t mean they’re not films. I don’t like some novels, but they still fit the mold of novel. Bad art is still art, and many video games supersede what’s considered good art! I agree with TWRM, better late than never lol. I don’t think I even posted a reply, I just wrote a novel in the comments :p

  3. This is a topic I really want to do a full post about. The quick rundown though: I firmly believe video games are art, and its a tough argument to say they are not. Especially nowadays with the visual, story, and sound elements!

    1. I completely agree! I’d love to read your full post about the topic too πŸ™‚ There’s definitely a lot to be said about it, but I think most people are in agreement that video games absolutely are art!

    1. Haha! I’ve been messing around with some setting and I feel like since my blog has had the same look for awhile, it was time to change it up a bit. I’m completely goth in real life, so the dark colors suit me better lol!! πŸ˜‰
