In July, the always awesome Lightning Ellen tagged me in a rather unique tag, something I’ve never done before… a female empowerment tag! In this tag, I have to answer questions about awesome ladies in video games, tv, movies, etc. etc. This is probably going to be somewhat difficult for me, as I tend to draw blanks when I’m asked very specific questions… good thing this is a blog post and not a face-to-face conversation with someone, haha! Anywho, let’s check out the rules for this tag:
- PingBack to Kate at Melting Pots and Other Calamities and pingback to a post of hers
- Answer the questions
- Choose female characters from books, movies, TV, anime, webtoons, etc.
- Tag as many people
- Have fun!
Sounds easy enough, right? Let’s see how it goes!!
1. Name a heroine you like but whom you feel is always overshadowed by the male characters in the story.
As I am in the midst of re-reading the Harry Potter books (I do it once every couple years or so), the first character that pops in my mind is Professor McGonagall. She is super strict and a total stickler for rules and I feel like had I attended Hogwarts, she and I would not have always seen eye to eye! Nevertheless, she is a bad ass witch who knows her shit, yet is often overshadowed by Professor Dumbledore, Professor Snape, etc. She doesn’t go totally unrecognized, of course, but I feel like she deserved a little more of the limelight!
2. For that matter, name a heroine whom you feel is always overshadowed by the other female characters in the story.
I’m going to go with Elizabeth the vampire in the Fanged Fae series by Ashley McCleo. For those unfamiliar, I have reviewed the books on my blog because Ashley is kind enough to send me ARCs of her books! Anyway, Elizabeth is a supporting character who helps the main character, Mauri, learn how to control and utilize her vampire side. We get glimpses of Elizabeth fighting, and she sounds completely bad ass and unstoppable. I just wish there was more of her in the books!!
3. Name a character who had potential but was greatly underutilized in her story.
This might seem like a completely off-the-wall answer, but I chose Vesta from Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. She runs another farm in town, and she seems like she knows what she’s doing. Instead of developing her character more and maybe providing a bit of friendly competition, she happily sells you seeds so your farm can be more successful than hers. She literally sits back and does nothing while you slowly build up your farm and cause hers to fade into obscurity because no one wants to buy her shit anymore. Come on, Vesta, get it together!
4. Name a female character who you either find better in her book than her movie, find better in her movie than her book, or whose portrayals you find equal.
Maybe it’s because Harry Potter is on my mind… but I love both the book and the film version of Hermione! I’ll admit, she annoyed me a little at first, but despite her occasional know-it-all attitude, she really is a badass. I had a clear picture in my head of what she was like in the books, and she was brought to life so well on the big screen.
5. Name a character who you want more backstory on.
How about Cooking Mama? She’s starred in several games, but we don’t know shit about her except for the fact that she gets angry as fuck when you mess up her recipes. I want to know more about her, but I also want to punch her in her angry little face.
6. Name a character with traits you feel are sadly overlooked by everyone.
Let’s all hear it for Erin from Super Tennis!! Anyone remember Erin? What about Debbie? Amy? Shit y’all… these are all super awesome female tennis players that kick ass, and no one knows anything about them. They can beat the boys any ol’ time, but I bet not many people used them when they played this game. I can’t even really find any pictures online.
P.S. I know next to nothing about sports, but I played the shit out of this game when I was a kid!
7. Name a morally grey character. (Villain or anti hero!)
I’m going to have to go with my girl Nitara from Mortal Kombat on this one. I’ve mentioned her quite a long time ago in one of my posts, but she is a badass vampire who just wants to do her own thing. She’s not a villain, but she’s not interested in being a hero either. What’s so wrong with that?
8. A character you’re stunned isn’t more famous.
I’m probably the wrong person to look to as far as what’s famous and what’s not. I tend to stay in my own little world and pay little mind to things like that! Uh… I’m drawing a complete blank here. I guess I’ll choose Clare from the Claymore manga series. There is way too much shit to explain the Claymore storyline here, but let’s just say that she’s a badass and she deserves credit.
There you have it! If anyone wants to answer these questions themselves, go for it! 🙂
