Back in July, my blogging friend The Shameful Narcissist wrote a blog entry in which she described the process of creating her own blogging award! Check out the entry here! That’s a really cool thing for her to do… and she made my day by nominating me for her new award!
It’s called The Eclectic Blogger Award, and she describes it as this…
The Eclectic Blogger Award is presented to those blogs that are both eclectic and engaging, where conversation flows freely, where new and different ideas are always welcome. It’s to recognize blogs that always have interesting content to match the amazing, creative, and hard-working creators that make them possible. These are the blogs that inspire you to read, watch, play, and/or create content to further enhance not only the blogosphere but also the general zeitgeist, because they themselves enrich it with their existence.
Here’s what she said about me in her post:
Defy the Majority – I can’t look at Kirby now without thinking about this awesome blogger who’s made me want to play Animal Crossing as well as the big, puffball’s games! I can’t help but appreciate someone who diligently goes through my ramblings from quite long ago, reading through and commenting on them. She understands the struggle of not only keeping up with the backlog, but keeping up with talking about the backlog. I know it helps keep me honest and work on it, but it takes time away from, you know, working on the backlog :p
These are the rules for the award:
Nominate whomever and however many bloggers you want for the award.
Share links from your blog for some of your favorite (or most eclectic!) posts.
Well, you know how I do… I nominate anyone and everyone! 🙂
And as far as my favorite posts from my own blog… *clicks on random posts*…
I disappoint myself lol. I can’t really pick one! I do like my Gaming Month in Review posts, though I’m very inconsistent with those because they take up a lot of time and I’m always tired! I also like doing tag posts now and then, because those are a fun way to share more about myself!
So there you have it! Thanks for the fabulous new award, I really appreciate it! 🙂
I’ve done this once before from my good blogging friend The Shameful Narcissist, but I figured… why not do it again? 😉 Back in May, she received a Liebster Award and invited anyone to answer her questions. I love doing this type of stuff, so I thought I’d jump on board! The link to her post is here, and please go check her out- she’s awesome, and I’ve learned A LOT about Final Fantasy from her! Without further ado, here are her questions!
1. What is your favorite musical instrument?
I love the guitar! I just love the way it sounds. I used to love playing the guitar, too, until my stupid hands decided they’d rather develop arthritis and carpal tunnel instead of letting me live out my rockstar dreams. Fuck you, hands!
2. What video game world and/or locale would you live in?
I’ve chosen one of these before, but I’ll try to go with a different place this time. Hmm… I know! In the spirit of Halloween, I’d love to live in Luigi’s Mansion. It’d be full of spooky fun! I’d try to make friends with all the ghosts, especially that little ghost doggy, whose name currently escapes me.
3. What holiday do you hate the most?
Blasphemy! I love all holidays because most of them are a great excuse for my family to get together. But if there is one that I like a little less than the others, it would be Valentine’s Day. I’m not really a huge fan of pink stuff, hearts, and flowers everywhere. Ick!
4. What’s your favorite type of pet?
Oh man… this is really hard for me to say! I’ve had many type of pets over the years, and I’ve loved them all for different reasons! Hmm… well, I just can’t pick. Right now I have a dog, a cat, a bearded dragon, a fish, an axolotl, and 4 turtles, and I feel like I’d be choosing my favorite child lol. I will say that I LOVE having a bearded dragon, though. They are so fun and cuddly, despite their prehistoric appearance. ❤ Give reptiles a chance!
5. What’s your phobia (if you feel like sharing it)?
Oh god… roaches. Disgusting, creepy roaches. They are a mainstay where I live because of the humid environment, but man… if you ever want to see me completely lose my shit, have a roach crawl by me. I lose all dignity and I will scream, jump on top of tables, knock people over to get out of the way…. it’s pathetic. I realize it’s a bit of an irrational fear because it’s not like they bite or anything, but they are just so GROSS I can’t handle it. And when they fly? Forget it. I am almost having a fucking heart attack right now just thinking about one making a beeline for my face.
6. What’s your preferred social media site?
I don’t really have one! I don’t really participate, haha. I don’t care what people are doing every second of the day, and I don’t care to share what I’m doing either! I guess the only social media site I’m part of is Pinterest, but I don’t go on there to be social…. and most of the people I “follow” I don’t know anyway!
7. What book did you read as a child that now disappoints you as an adult?
I’ve been making it a habit to re-read some of my favorite childhood books every now and then. Some of my favorite series as a kid were The Baby-Sitters Club, Goosebumps, Fear Street, and Animorphs. I have to say, the past couple Fear Street books I’ve read were kind of lame-o. The plots are thin and the characters are a bit annoying… oh well. I’d still read them again anyway.
8. What’s your favorite type of ice cream?
Coffee flavored! I don’t eat much ice cream anyway, but when I do, I mostly always buy coffee flavored. I used to get it when I was a kid because no one else in my house liked it, so I would have it all to myself *evil laugh*
9. Roughly how many video games and/or books do you own?
A LOT of video games! Between my husband and I, we have over 1700 games! That number is inflated a bit by all the plug-and-play systems that have many games on them. Even without those, that would still put our total around like 1200 or so. Hey, I have no shame. It’s a hobby I enjoy, and it helps that I kept all of my games throughout the years, you know? As far as books, between physical copies, manga, and my Kindle, a few hundred maybe? It sucks because I did not hold on to many of the books I had when I was younger, which I am kicking myself in the ass for. I am downloading some of my childhood favorites on my Kindle though, so I’m slowly rebuilding my collection.
10. Who is your favorite MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) character?
It’s kind of hard for me to say, honestly. I enjoy Marvel movies and such, but I’m not exactly an extreme fan of any one character. Maybe I’ll just say Groot from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies 😉
11. What is your favorite cartoon?
SpongeBob Squarepants. Oh, how I love SpongeBob. The show is completely ridiculous, but I don’t care. It makes me laugh and it’s great to watch when you want to veg out and think about absolutely nothing! I also really like Family Guy.
Bonus Question: Can you answer The Riddle of the Sphinx (no Googling!)?
I feel like this is something I knew a long time ago, but it’s escaped my mind now 😉 Oops!
So there you have it! These questions are always fun to answer! 🙂
Back in April (geez, one day I’ll be caught up on my posts!) I was nominated for The Sunshine Blogger Award by Red Metal over at Extra Life! It’s always an honor to be nominated for an award- it feels good to know that there are some people who find my blog interesting, haha! So let’s get started!
1. What is the dumbest competition you ever got in with your friends?
Hmm…. that’s an interesting question! I’m not a very competitive person- I mostly stay out of any sort of competition if I can help it! Even when I was in school when I was younger I didn’t care much to compete. I guess I’m kind of a softy, haha.
2. If you could form a band, which genre of music would you end up playing?
Oh, no doubt I would be in a metal band! I love metal, hard rock, etc. so it would only be natural that I would be in that type of band. I’d probably play the guitar, despite the fact that my poor arthritic hands no longer have the dexterity to do so. Or maybe I’d just be the lead singer so I could scream all day long! 😉
3. What is the first film you ever watched in theaters?
Oh wow! I don’t really remember going to a lot of movies when I was younger. For some reason the first movie that comes to mind is Casper the Friendly Ghost, which came out in 1995 when I was 9. I also remember the fact that it was pouring down rain that day! There may have been an earlier movie that I went to, but I just can’t remember!
4. What is the oldest film you’ve watched all the way through?
Well, I’m not exactly a movie buff. I do enjoy watching movies, but it’s not like I’ve seen all the classics or anything. I would say the original The Wizard of Oz (1939) is the oldest movie I’ve seen. I have a distinct memory of watching it on my old tiny black and white television when I was 3 or 4 🙂
5. Have you ever fallen asleep watching a film before?
Oh yes. This shitty “horror” movie called Dark Water. It was so cheesy- basically this stupid woman was screaming because there was black mold growing slowly on the ceiling. Okay, so the mold actually wasn’t mold- it was a demon or something. I don’t know- I fell asleep, remember? All I know is that it was lame and even the fact that I consumed too many shots before watching did not help keep me entertained!
6. What is your personal record for most number of films watched in a day?
Probably 3 or 4! Sometimes when my husband and I are lazy on the weekends we’ll watch a few movies just to veg out!
7. What is the single most heretical opinion you hold when it comes to video games?
Umm…. I do NOT like the Fire Emblem series at all. I’m sorry. Fire Emblem is a series a lot of people enjoy, but it’s not for me. It’s mainly the gameplay that I don’t enjoy, but I don’t seem to connect with any characters either. I’m not downing the series in any way, and I feel bad for even saying that I don’t like it! I can certainly appreciate Fire Emblem, I just don’t care to play the games.
8. What is your proudest achievement playing a game?
I’m proud whenever I stick to and actually beat a game, haha! I am gonna say, though, I’m proud of myself for completely mastering Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. I have fully maxed out every character, done every little side quest, collected everything there is to collect… I’ve even found all the little treasure chests hidden everywhere. I’m obsessed, I can’t help it! And since I have an SNES Classic, I’ll probably be playing it again soon 🙂
9. What do you believe to be one of the few advantages that gaming critics have over film critics?
I think that the fact that you can actually interact with the medium is huge! I enjoy watching movies, don’t get me wrong, but it is a passive activity. Gaming is interactive, and everyone’s experience will vary.
10. Have you ever binge-watched a show?
Yes! There have been several. Breaking Bad is one of the main ones… believe it or not, my husband and I didn’t watch this show at all until a few months after the last season aired! For some reason, I didn’t find the premise that interesting, so I never tried to watch it. Then my mom and stepdad told me how great the show was, so we decided to check it out. We were instantly hooked! In fact, when we got to the last season, only the first half was on Netflix here in the USA. So naturally, we tricked Netflix into thinking that we were in the UK so we could watch the rest! We couldn’t wait 🙂
Also, Stranger Things. We told ourselves we would spread the shows out and watch them over time, but that did not happen! Where the hell is season 3?!
There have been other shows I’m sure, but those two definitely take the cake!
11. Do you follow any webcomics?
No, I don’t! Should I be? 😉 I’ll happily take some suggestions!
And there you have it! Thanks again for the nomination, Red Metal! I appreciate it! 🙂
Back in January, Art of Redress was kind enough to honor me with the Blogger Recognition Award!
I always really appreciate anyone who takes the time to read my little blog, and getting recognized from time to time means I don’t totally suck, right?? 😉
Anyway, here’s the rules for this award!
Say thanks to who nominated you and leave a link back to that person’s blog.
Done and done, if you read the first sentence of this post! 🙂 Art of Redress is seriously a great blog- every entry is really entertaining to read! Please check it out if you haven’t yet.
Give the story or history of your blog.
I’ve touched on this before, but I’ll do a little recap anyway. I’ve always enjoyed writing in any form- short stories, journaling, etc. I’ve kept several online journals throughout the years, though none of them stuck around. A few years ago, I started reading a couple gaming blogs and found I really enjoyed the content. For awhile, I just lurked around and never wrote anything, haha! Then finally I decided what the hell, let me try this blogging thing out. I chose to blog about video games since that is my favorite hobby and I could blab on for hours about them! 🙂
Give two or more pieces of advice for new bloggers.
Are you sure you really want to listen to advice from someone with the user name DefyTheMajority?!? Haha! 🙂 Anyway, here’s my best advice.
#1: Don’t worry about being too formal! Blogging is supposed to be fun. I myself am a very casual blogger and when I write, I try to write as if I am having a conversation with a friend. I’m talking about video games here, not submitting a dissertation.
#2: Don’t put pressure on yourself to follow a schedule! I’m not saying blogging schedules are a bad thing. I have several friends I follow who always post on a consistent basis, and I do envy that. However, if I try to set a schedule for myself, it just makes me feel pressured. When I feel pressured, I end up not doing anything. Don’t stress yourself out!
#3: Blog about what you love. If you write about something you love, whether it be your favorite hobby, recipes, parenting advice, etc., if you feel passionate about it, it’ll be much easier to write about!
So there ya have it! The last two rules were to nominate other bloggers and leave comments telling them that you did so, but… you know me! I nominate everyone! Woo!
Awesome blogger Art of Redress nominated me for another blogging award, this time the Mystery Blogger Award! As far as what the Mystery Blogger Award is… I’m stealing a quote from a quote that was already stolen. Woo!
“Mystery Blogger Award” is an award for amazing bloggers with ingenious posts. Their blog not only captivates; it inspires and motivates. They are one of the best out there, and they deserve every recognition they get. This award is also for bloggers who find fun and inspiration in blogging; and they do it with so much love and passion.
With that being said, here’s all the rules:
Display the award logo on your blog.
List the rules.
Thank the blogger who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
Mention the creator of the award and provide a link as well.
Tell your readers three things about yourself.
Answer five questions from the nominator.
Nominate from 10 to 20 bloggers.
Notify the bloggers by leaving a comment on their blog.
Ask your nominees any five questions of your choice, including one weird or funny question.
Share the link to your best post.
So let’s get started! 🙂
Three facts about myself!
1. It’s taking me a long time to come up with three interesting facts. Seriously. I don’t know what my problem is, but I must be really boring or something, because I can’t think of anything interesting to say about myself.
2. I love horror movies, but I don’t ever really get scared. I mean, I’ve been a bit unsettled at times, but I know everything is fake, so I don’t get worked up. In fact, a lot of time when the big scary demon/ monster/ psycho killer is revealed or is in action, it makes me laugh. Maybe there’s something wrong with me.
3. I could live off of french fries and potato chips. I realize that’s not the healthiest of diets, but some days, I just don’t care 😉
And now, here’s the five questions I was asked!
1. Do you follow a sports team? (I’m an Everton fan, though my interest has waned of late!)
I’m not big into sports, so I don’t follow a particular team or anything. I have to say that I really love watching gymnastics though! I’ve always harbored a secret desire to be a gymnast- I even took lessons when I was younger, until the trainer moved away and my mom wouldn’t drive me to their new location because it was too far away! If an adult gymnastics class ever opens up near me, I’m in- I’ll probably kill myself, but it would sure be fun to try!
2. Do you have any tattoos? If not, what tattoo would you get? (I haven’t got any, though I’d love to get one…just not sure what to get)
I have 10 tattoos right now… I LOVE tattoos! I think they are so beautiful and a great form of expression. Surprisingly only one of my tats is video game related, but every single one of them is meaningful to me. I do have at least one other tattoo planned- a phoenix of some sort. I just keep putting it off, and now it’s almost time to swim, which means I won’t get it done until maybe the fall! (I like to get a tattoo when it’s cooler, that way it has more time to heal before I subject it to sun and water!)
3. If you could share an apartment with any video game/film/TV character, who would it be and why? (I reckon Max Payne would be pretty quiet and there would always be painkillers available)
Hmmm… this is a tough one, as I don’t like sharing my space with people (excluding my husband of course)! I think almost any character would get on my nerves at some point. Yes, even Kirby- come on, he’d eat all my damn food and not feel bad about it! Maybe I’d go ahead and pick Snorlax. Yeah, he’s huge and eats a lot, but he would sleep most of the day away, and he’s super squishy and cuddly. I could live with that!
4. What’s the saddest song you’ve ever heard? (Nutshell by Alice in Chains for me, especially the Unplugged version)
There’s a couple songs that could probably answer this question for me, but I’m going to go with “Ashes of Eden” by Breaking Benjamin. Not gonna lie, this song literally made me cry every time I heard it after my grandfather passed away last year. (only in my car, not ever actually in front of anybody GEEZ!) I normally don’t go all mushy, but something about this song brings out the sadness. Here’s a snippet of the lyrics:
Are you with me after all… Why can’t I hear you? Are you with me through it all… Then why can’t I feel you? Stay with me, don’t let me go… Because there’s nothing left at all… Stay with me, don’t let me go… Until the Ashes of Eden fall.
If you feel like crying, go listen to that song.
5. What would the title of your autobiography be? (Mine would just be ‘Redression’ with a picture of me made from copies of Dynamite Dux)
Plot twist: my autobiography wouldn’t have a name. The cover of the book would be all black, just like my soul. And the inside would contain a bunch of random blurbs and pictures of animals. It wouldn’t make much sense, much like I don’t make sense in real life.
So there you have it! Five random questions that were super fun to answer! 🙂 Oh and as for a link to my best post…. I dunno, you pick one and pretend I gave a link to it! Thanks again to Art of Redress for nominating me 😉 If anyone wants to answer these questions, please feel free!
Back in January, Retro Redress (now known as Art of Redress!) nominated me for The Unique Blogger Award! I really appreciate it! 😉 There’s a couple questions to answer, so let’s get to it!
1. What is the one game that you just can’t beat? A game that you enjoy playing and have devoted lots of time to, but just can never get to the end?
The game that comes to mind for me is Bust-A-Move for the SNES! I’ve had this game for a long time, and I’ve played the hell out of it. It’s probably one of my favorite puzzle games ever! Nevertheless, I cannot mark it as beaten, because I’ve always gotten stuck at level 99. There are 100 levels. I’m so damn close, but I just can’t beat level 99! I haven’t attempted to in several years, but I still get annoyed thinking about it.
2. What game do you think is underrated? A personal favorite that no-one appreciates?
I’m gonna go with a silly choice here. Back in 2012, my husband and I got our first smart phones and we were pretty excited about it, because it was a huge upgrade from our regular phones! I immediately went on the App Store and searched around for games that would be fun to play. One of them was called Kitten Sanctuary. It is essentially a match-3 puzzle type game, but it was really relaxing and fun to play! If you beat the level, you saved a kitten (from… aliens I think, haha). There were no stupid microtransactions and even the later levels were challenging but fair… literally no one I talk to has ever heard of this game, but it was one of my favorites! 🙂
3. What is the gaming challenge you would most like to complete? Is there one specific mission or collectible you want to get? Is it a personal thing that you always wanted to do, just to say you did it?
Listen, if I can beat a game and knock that number down on my backlog a little more, that’s challenge enough for me! 😉 I’m not one that needs to collect trophies or 100% every game. However, one thing I think would be neat for me to do is collect every piece of furniture in Animal Crossing for the GameCube. It’s a more attainable goal than in most of the other Animal Crossing games, since there is no DLC or region specific items to collect/ trade. I actually think I’m somewhat close to doing it, but I have to look back at my guide book and see! 🙂
So there you have it!! Thanks again for the award- I really appreciate it! 🙂 I have a couple other awards to get to as well, so hopefully I’ll be posting those soon!
A little while ago, I wrote about how my friend The Shameful Narcissist posted some questions after receiving a Liebster Award, and she invited everyone to answer the questions! I happily answered them and after I completed the whole damn post, released I had answered the wrong set of questions! 😉 Here’s the post where I answered all the wrong ones. So now, I’m going to attempt to answer HER questions… let’s see if I can do it right this time! 😉
1. When you read, do you visualize characters and settings? As in, do the words create images in your mind?
Most definitely! That’s what I love about reading. I have a pretty vivid imagination even as an adult, so I immediately take the words and form pictures in my mind. That’s probably why I get mad when I read a book and I’ve visualized characters and settings in a certain way, and then I see the movie version and it just doesn’t compare to what I see in my mind!
2. What’s your favorite kind of tea?
Well, I really love iced tea, especially lemon iced tea! I have a few different brands I like but Pure Leaf is amazing. I could drink that all day, every day and not get sick of it. I also love Arnold Palmers, which is a half iced tea/ half lemonade blend. I enjoy hot tea as well, especially Celestial Seasonings Sleepy Time Tea. I have to be careful with herbal teas though, because a lot of them make my heart race and that’s no fun.
3. What’s the best game you’ve played or watched this year so far?
2018 is still quite young, but I have tried out a few new games so far this year! This answer may come as a surprise, but so far the game I have loved the most that I first played this year would have to be Thumper for the PlayStation VR. To me, it is amazing and though it is perfectly playable without VR, I can’t imagine doing so. Being immersed in that game with your headphones on and that intimidating, anxiety- inducing music is just an incredible experience!
As far as games I’ve watched… I actually haven’t watched any this year so far! Weird, considering I do love watching people play games. I just haven’t had time to do so 😦
4. What’s the best book you’ve read this year so far?
Again, since 2018 is young, I haven’t read many books yet. Even so, I really have enjoyed Fluidus Rising and Mirror Sacrifice by the very talented Margo Ryerkerk! I did small reviews of both of these books here on my blog, so check them out if you’re interested! Her next book is supposed to come out soon, and I really can’t wait!
5. Do you prefer to watch a show one episode at a time or binge watch?
Most of the time, I prefer one at a time… makes the show last longer and gives me something to look forward to! However, there are a couple shows I just can’t do that with and I prefer to binge watch… Stranger Things, 12 Monkeys, etc.!
6. Do you prefer “people” names for pets or “non-people” names?
I don’t really care what other people do, but in general I like to name my pets “non-people” names. Naming your pets something fun and weird is part of the fun of owning an animal! 😉 Note that I do have a turtle named Bob, which is a “people” name… my aunt and uncle actually gave him to me as a Christmas present 20 years ago, and they called him Bob because he bobbed his head up and down in the water. The name just stuck for me, so I didn’t want to change it!
7. What would you change your eye color to if you could?
You know, I’m quite happy with the color of my eyes, so I wouldn’t necessarily change them! They are dark blue and they occasionally look gray… though if I’m wearing a blue shirt, they’ll look a little lighter 🙂
8. Do you tan or burn?
I am really pale so man, do I burn 😦 I often joke that if I just look at the sun, I’ll start burning, which is why I am a goth LOL. In reality, I do enjoy being in the sun, but I just make sure I wear a high SPF sunscreen and always reapply!
9. What’s your fictional/ fantasy job, as in, what would your job be if you lived in a fictional/ fantasy world?
Hmmm…. this is a tough one! So many cool choices! If I had to choose, I would say it’d be neat to be some sort of mercenary that goes after all the rotten assholes of the world… someone who takes them out and looks really cool doing it, then goes home and cuddles puppies afterwards!
10. What’s your favorite dystopian city?
I’m gonna go with an odd choice here and say New New York from the TV show Futurama! It may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of “dystopian” but to me it still qualifies. It’s a dysfunctional, futuristic society that might still be all right to live in. Most other dystopian cities from novels and movies that I’m familiar with aren’t exactly fun places to be. In New New York, you never know what you’re gonna get! 😉
11. How close is your blogger persona to your IRL one?
This is pretty much me! I try to write my blog posts in a very casual way, as if I were actually speaking to you in a real life conversation. What you see is what you get- I don’t see a point in it being any other way! After all, I’m not trying to impress anyone here 🙂
Well, there you have it! I successfully answered the correct questions from The Shameful Narcissist! It is always fun doing posts like this. I have a couple other blogging awards I need to get to as well, so hopefully I’ll get those published soon!
